Biography

Dr. Sunil Manohar Dash is an Assistant Professor, in the Department of Aerospace Engineering, at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, India. Before this position, he worked as a Research Fellow in the International Design Center, at the Singapore University of Technology and Design and Massachusetts Institute of Technology Alliance (SUTD-MIT), Singapore, and in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore. He earned his Ph.D. Degree from the National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore, in 2014, and a B.Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, India, in 2009. He has been honoured with the Young Engineers Award – 2021 from the Institution of Engineers India (IEI) and the Young Scientist Award – 2020 from the Department of Science and Technology, Odisha, India, for his excellent research activities in the field of Aerospace Engineering. Additionally, for his contribution to the Education sector in India, he has received, the Making India Employable 50 under 50 Award from the India Education and India Employer Forums. He has also received a silver medal from the former president of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, and a gold medal from the Institution of Engineers India (IEI) for his excellent performance in his undergraduate studies. He has published more than 40 international journal and conference papers. His research interests are in the field of flapping aerodynamics, active flow separation control using biomimetic design, and experimental and computational fluid mechanics.

  1. Received the Making India Employable 50 under 50 Award from the India Education Forum and India Employer Forum for the Year 2023-24.

  2. Invited as the Chief Guest in the National Aviation Tech Fest 2023, organised by Redwings and NSSC, IIT Kharagpur at Seoni, Madhya Pradesh, India.

  3. Received the Faculty Excellence Award Year 2021-22 at the Assistant Professor Level at IIT Kharagpur.

  4. Received the Young Engineers Award in the Aerospace Engineering Discipline from the Institutions of Engineers India (IEI) for the Year 2020-21.

  5. Received the Odisha Young Scientists Award in the Aerospace Engineering Discipline from Odisha Bigyan Academy, Department of Science and Technology Odisha, for the Year 2019-20.

  6. Received the International Travel Support (ITS) from the Department of Science and Technology India to attend 72nd APS DFD Conference in the USA in the year 2019. (Declined)

  7. Received the National University of Singapore (NUS) Ph.D. Research Fellowship for the years 2010-2014.

  8. Received the Best Conference Paper award in the Fluid Mechanics session in the conference IC-RIDME-2018, Shillong, Meghalaya, India.

  9. Chaired conference sessions on Aerodynamics Study in ICAFM-2016, Malaysia, on Active Flow Control in 70th DFD meeting, APS-2017, Denver, USA, and on Fluid Mechanics in IC-RIDME-2018, Shillong, Meghalaya, India.

  10. Honoured with a Gold Medal from the Institution of Engineers India (IEI) for being the Best Mechanical Engineering Graduate of the year – 2009.

  11. Honoured with an Institute Silver Medal from the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, for being the Best Mechanical Engineering Graduate of the year – 2009.

  12. Received the Summer Research Fellowship – year 2008, from Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR).
